The terrific film author and educator writes about Shimizu Hiroshi, a Japanese filmmaker who is credited to some 163 films within 35 years. Bordwell’s essay focuses on releases from the recent Eclipse release, Travels with Shimizu Hiroshi, likely to be my next Eclipse purchase.

Photographers Denied the Freedom To Choose What... →
A woman photographer is fined under New Mexico anti-discrimination law after refusing to shoot a same-sex couple’s wedding. That’s New Mexico, of the United States, not a recent part of Mexico. I make the distinction because the story seemed so outlandish that at first I didn’t believe it took place in the USA.

– Regarding Left 4 Dead’s new Survival Mode, released next Tuesday.
An hour-and-some-long campaign racked up a zombie kill count usually over a thousand bodies. Survival Mode rounds are supposed to last, at most, ten minutes. Extreme pace indeed.

Music from the game, by a choice few excellent musicians. All tracks (and musicians, and musicians’ albums) are recommended, except perhaps the remixes.

Script by Justin Marks, writer of the recent game movie Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, which currently has an aggregate rating of 17 out of 100 on Metacritic. Now we just get to see what director will take the helm and plow this sucker straight into the rocks.

Silent Hill Wii: No Combat, Just Chase Sequences
So says GoNintendo about the just-announced Silent Hill game. Quite a shift from the last game, Silent Hill Homecoming, which has an increased focus on combat and confrontation.

I’m not as big a fan of xkcd as I used to be (which isn’t saying a lot), but today’s wind-turbine-themed comic is definitely one of my favorites.
Actually, if the comic wasn’t anything more than the first panel, it’d still be high on my list.

Actually, I don’t own a Blu-ray player, but it’s nice news, player or no.
Gateway games
Puzzle-adventure games Gateway and Gateway II: excellent stuff. A few clever puzzles, a little bit of suspense, an unsettling atmosphere (including sound effects and music from the creepy Thief games and System Shock 2) and a solid 45 minutes of gaming on a fine Saturday afternoon felt just right.
But if puzzle-solving robots aren’t exciting enough, Killer Japanese Seizure Robots robots...
